Gulf Islands Cruise - Day 1 July 31 2010

Well here we are anchored in Ganges Harbour, Salt Spring Island,  It was a pleasant trip over - took about 3 hours from Semiahmoo.  We woke up to overcast skies but it got progressivly better as we went along.  The strange thing is, the harbour was very windy and rough, much worse than the open waters of the Strait were.  Apparantly the strong southeast winds are rare here but we got'em today!  Must be a birthday present for me!  But even as I write it is improving.

Reading material for the trip

Shortly after we were settled in, the sailboat skipper next to us alerted Leo that the boat behind us was drifting and heading straight for us!  Damn!  Leo got in the dinghy, got aboard, found the guy's blackberry, phoned his wife, left a message, then called the coast guard.  The only thing that was keeping him from drifting faster was the fact that his chain was hooked over another boat (also empty).  Anyway the coast guard showed up soon after and managed to get them untangled and towed to safer area.  Whew!

Canadian Coast Guard to the rescue!

Last night we stayed over at the marina and had dinner at the pub there - Packer's, and I was surprised when Jared and Kyla showed up to have dinner with us!  They were a little late because of motorcycle trouble and ended up taking the car, but anyway we had such a nice time.  We walked around later checking out the tent area where they are having their wedding/ reception.  It's so pretty there and it's going to be such a great time.

Thank you for the birthday wishes, Jesse and hopefully we will get to see you in Gabriola during our trip!

Leo is taking me to Hastings House tonight for my birthday.  It's a beautiful old historical house here in Ganges and considered to be one of the finest restaurants in the country.  The inn is affiliated with "The Small Luxury Hotels of the World".  so - I am very excited indeed!   I'll be posting pics tomorrow - now it's time to go eat!
